Speaking of Halloween activities, some of the best photos to frame are family and friends carving pumpkins together. But did you ever wonder how the tradition of carving a pumpkin started?

We did a little digging around and found an origin story about the Jack O’Lantern that’s sure to give you a fright this Halloween season.

Here’s how the story goes, according to its legend:

  • Hundreds of years ago in Ireland, a cruel man named Stingy Jack played tricks on everyone in town. However, Stingy Jack made the mistake of deciding to play a trick on the devil, by luring him up into a tree and surrounding it with crosses.
  • The devil couldn’t leave the tree until he promised Stingy Jack that when Jack died, the devil wouldn’t take his soul.
  • Years later, when Jack passed away and arrived in heaven, he was told by Saint Peter that he couldn’t enter the gates because he had been so cruel on earth.
  • But when he went to hell, he wasn’t allowed in due to the promise the devil made him.
  • At this point, Jack had nowhere to go. So, the devil gave him a flame to light his way through the dark land between heaven and hell.
  • At the time, Jack happened to have a turnip in his pocket (because who doesn’t carry around a turnip in their pocket, right?)
  • Jack decided to hollow out his turnip for a place to keep the flame.
  • Jack was forced to roam the darkness with his turnip—creating the very first Jack O’Lantern!
  • The Irish made it a tradition on Halloween to hollow out turnips, potatoes, and gourds to ward off evil spirits and keep Jack away. However, when Irish families moved to America, they found pumpkins to be much easier to carve, thus creating the traditional Jack O’Lantern we carve today!
