- 1. Our sun has magnetic fields that are constantly contorting as it rotates on its axis. When these magnetic fields are twisted together they burst, creating sunspots.
- 2. When particles from the sun are released from these sunspots, bits of plasma are thrown into space.
- 3. When these particles come in contact with the Earth’s magnetic field they mix with atoms and molecules of other elements, which then create the aurora borealis (a.k.a. the northern lights!).
