- Food! This is an essential part of celebrating any holiday. But the fried potato pancakes, latkes, and the jelly donuts, sufganiyot, are enough to make Hanukkah everyone’s favorite time of year.
- Candy! While technically food, the chocolate coins or “gelt” deserves it’s own shout out. These chocolate coins represent the money Jews gave to the poor in historic times and can also be used for playing the dreidel game.
- Music! These traditional Hanukkah songs need to be included on our list. Ma’Oz Tzur (“Rock of Ages”) is sung after the lighting of the candles each night of Hanukkah. Of course the song “I Have a Little Dreidel” is widely popular with everyone. Other traditional songs are “Sivivon, sov, sov, sov,” “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah,” and the folk song “Light One Candle.”
