Cherish Hanukkah Traditions with GiftWorksPlus!

The Jewish Festival of Lights, better known as Hanukkah, marks the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the Maccabean revolt. When most people think of Hanukkah traditions, they think of lighting candles on the menorah or spinning the dreidel. But there are so many more traditions that we wanted to share with you this season! Here are some of our favorites:

• Food! This is an essential part of celebrating any holiday. But the fried potato pancakes, latkes, and the jelly donuts, sufganiyot, are enough to make Hanukkah everyone’s favorite time of year.
• Candy! While technically food, the chocolate coins or “gelt” deserves it’s own shout out. These chocolate coins represent the money Jews gave to the poor in historic times and can also be used for playing the dreidel game.
• Music! These traditional Hanukkah songs need to be included on our list. Ma’Oz Tzur (“Rock of Ages”) is sung after the lighting of the candles each night of Hanukkah. Of course the song “I Have a Little Dreidel” is widely popular with everyone. Other traditional songs are “Sivivon, sov, sov, sov,” “Hanukkah, Oh Hanukkah,” and the folk song “Light One Candle.”

With the food, candy, music, games, and the menorah that all symbolize the successful rebellion of the Jewish freedom fighters, there is so much to be celebrated during Hanukkah.
