Top o’ the morning! In case you haven’t been paying attention Saint Patrick’s Day is here and at Gift Works Plus we could not be more excited! Nowadays, St. Patrick’s Day celebrations are not just for the Irish. There are parades, festivals, and parties all over the world, but have you ever wondered how it’s done in Ireland? Here is what Gift Works Plus found out:
- In the U.S., Saint Patrick’s Day is mostly about parades and drinking. In Ireland, the day is much more solemn as it is first and foremost a Holy Day to remember the patron saint. Most Irish go to mass and hold off on going to the pub until afterwards.
- Parades actually are an American tradition. The first parade to celebrate the holiday was in New York in the year 1766. The first St. Paddy’s Day parade in Ireland did not take place until 1995, over two hundred years later! Interestingly enough, the parade was only held to boost tourism.
- If you are looking for a more American-style party in Ireland, Dublin has a five-day long festival. You may even be able to find some green beer, a tradition that started in the U.S. and Canada.
