- In 1953, the folks at Swanson ordered a few too many frozen turkeys for Thanksgiving…and by a few we mean 26 tons. This lead to the first TV dinners being created!
- Abraham Lincoln declared Thanksgiving a national holiday thanks to a magazine editor named Sarah Josepha Hale who campaigned for 17 years in order to make it happen.
- Sarah Josepha Hale also wrote the nursery rhyme about a girl named Mary who had a little lamb.
- Black Friday is known for being a pretty big day for shopping, but it is also the busiest day of the year for plumbers, likely due to people having a little too much Thanksgiving fun.
- The first Thanksgiving was eaten with spoons and knives. Forks weren’t invented until around ten years after.
- Each year the president pardons a turkey from being eaten for Thanksgiving dinner. This tradition started in 1947 with President Truman.
- The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade is an even longer tradition; it began in 1924 and featured only animals from the Central Park Zoo.
- Benjamin Franklin wanted the turkey to be the national bird instead of the eagle, saying it was a more “respectable” bird.
