- Spring festivals were held to honor the goddess Rhea in Greek mythology. She was said to be the mother of many gods and springtime was the time to honor her, just as springtime is when we honor our mothers now.
- Ancient Romans also celebrated their mother goddess Cybele with a springtime festival that lasted for three days. These festivals were complete with masquerades, parades, games, and offerings.
- In 17th century England, the fourth Sunday of Lent was called ‘Mothering Sunday’ and in church a prayer would be said to honor the Virgin Mary. Many people would return to their “mother church” where they had grown up and give flowers to their mothers.
