- Ann Reeve Jarvis came up with the idea of Mother’s Day in the late 19th After the passing of her own mother Ann wanted to create a day where everyone could show their appreciation for their mothers.
- Ann contacted store owner John Wanamaker, who then helped her start celebrations in his stores for the first Mother’s Day in1908.
- After the success of the first Mother’s Day, Ann wrote letters to newspapers and politicians trying to get Mother’s Day on the national calendar. Which proved to be very successful as in 1914, President Woodrow Wilson made the second Sunday of May officially Mother’s Day.
- However Ann wanted the day to be spent with family celebrating their love for their mothers. But the holiday quickly became commercialized. She didn’t like that it became about buying cards rather than spending the day with mom. She ended up spending the rest of her life trying to remove the holiday from the calendar.

As we get closer to Mother’s Day it seems we all strive to find a unique personal gift to show mom how much we care. But Mother’s Day has become one of the most commercialized holidays, and while we all tend to celebrate by sending flowers and cards, that’s not what the woman who started Mother’s Day had in mind.
