Don’t Miss the Beautiful Fall Colors this Autumn
GiftWorksPlus |
There are plenty of people who are sad to see summer go. But there are just as many autumn enthusiasts who have been waiting months for cozy sweaters, warm drinks, and colorful leaves. Even with cooler temperatures, fall is still a great time to get out in nature and enjoy the spectacular colors of the changing leaves.
Ever wonder what happens to make leaves change their colors? Or why some trees turn yellow, while others turn orange, or bright red? During the spring and summer months, the green leaves on trees use sunlight as energy to convert water and carbon dioxide into sugar and oxygen, also known as the process of photosynthesis. Trees store sugar, or glucose, as their energy source. Chlorophyll helps facilitate photosynthesis and it’s also what gives leaves their green color.
As the days get shorter as autumn approaches, trees see these shorter days as a signal that winter is coming. In winter, there isn’t enough sunlight or access to water for photosynthesis. So essentially, the trees “shut down” their food-making factories and live off of the glucose stores built up from the summer.
As the chlorophyll disappears from the leaves, they begin to turn different hues of yellow and orange. Bright red and deep purple colored leaves are usually the result of glucose being trapped in the leaves after photosynthesis stops. Brown colored leaves, like from oak trees, are usually caused by waste left in the leaves.
Take advantage of these beautiful autumn days by getting outside to enjoy the colors! And be sure to show off your photos of the fall foliage in a custom frame from GiftWorksPlus.
