- Back in Victorian times, it was considered bad luck to sign a Valentine’s Day card, thus every admirer was a secret one.
- Many people sign cards with “XOXO” meaning “hugs and kisses.” The “X” refers to kisses because in medieval times, people who were not able to write their names were asked to sign an “X” instead. The “X” was then kissed in a gesture of sincerity.
- In the Middle Ages, people would draw names from a bowl to decide who their Valentine would be. Once they drew, they would then pin the name onto their sleeves for a whole week, thus creating the expression “wear your heart on your sleeve.”
- Valentine’s Day has been celebrated for centuries, but it was first declared an official holiday by King Henry VII (NOT the one who beheaded his wives) in the year 1537.
- Chocolate has been used by many to cheer up someone who has had a bad day, but back in the 19th century, many physicians actually used it as treatment for those experiencing love sickness.
- In Finland, Valentine’s Day is referred to as Ystävänpäivä, which in English means “Friend’s Day,” which makes it a day to show your platonic friends some love and appreciation.
