GiftWorksPlus Dog Series: Cocker Spaniel
GiftWorksPlus |
From Lady in Lady and the Tramp to Prince William and Princess Kate’s dog, Lupo, Cocker Spaniels are gentle, smart dogs making great family pets that get along well with children. They have distinctive long, floppy ears and silky, wavy coats. Cocker Spaniels descended from spaniels, one of the oldest dog breeds, and may have originated in Spain (hence the name spaniels). Spaniels were originally bred to be hunting dogs and, with training, Cocker Spaniels still make good hunting dogs today.
Historically, there were two breeds of spaniels: Water Spaniels and Land Spaniels, bred for hunting different types of prey. Today, the larger spaniels are called Springer Spaniels, the smaller pups are Cocker Spaniels, and the medium-sized dogs are Sussex Spaniels. The breed is also differentiated by whether it’s an American Spaniel or an English Spaniel; the American Spaniel is bred more for show while the English Spaniel is bred for hunting.
Cocker Spaniels are the smallest in the Sporting Group for show dogs. In 1921, the American Cocker Spaniel became the first of its breed to win Best in Show at The Westminster Dog Show. Over time, the Cocker Spaniel became a very popular pet; however, this popularity led to overbreeding which caused many health and temperament problems. This makes it especially important to buy a Cocker Spaniel puppy from a reputable breeder. Cocker Spaniels currently rank as the 31st most popular dog breed.
