1.) Pick One Focus Point: Keep control of your pictures by using the manual focus option and turning off auto focus. When you use auto focus, the camera will generally focus on the closest object, and you may not want to highlight that spot.
2.) Focus on Eyes: Eyes tell a story and they are the most important part of a good picture. Be sure to focus on the eyes, especially if you are taking pictures for wedding gifts.
3.) Take Pictures in the Shade: Avoid direct sunlight to help avoid dark shadows. Taking pictures in the shade produces softer, more natural shadows. However, this may be difficult if you are taking summer vacation pictures. If you do take pictures in the bright sunlight, you can use a reflector to produce softer light or to direct light to a certain area. Don't position the object or people directly in front of the sun unless you are taking silhouette pictures.
4.) Look at the Background Through the Lens: Adjust your shot angle if there are power lines, signs, or other undesirable items visible in the background. Make sure that it doesn’t appear as if a foreign object is protruding out of the person you are photographing!
